Your elbows have been rough since August. You've tried the pump-bottle lotion, the $40 balm, the plastic-bead scrub that left your skin red before it left it smooth. None of it lasted past lunch.
A salt bar isn't a separate scrub you add to your routine. It's the bar you already wash with. The polish happens while you're in the shower, not as an extra step.
Here's what a salt bar actually does, who it's good for, and who should reach for a different bar instead.
What does a salt bar do to your skin?
Fine salt crystals in the bar buff away dry, flaky skin while you lather. No separate scrub, no plastic microbeads, no harsh grit. The salt itself contains over 20 minerals, including magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc.
The bar rinses clean, without the tight, squeaky feeling a harsh scrub can leave. The salt and the oils each have their own job: the salt does the exfoliating, and the oils do the softening.
Who a salt bar is actually for
- Rough elbows, heels, knees and shins, the spots a regular bar and a body lotion never quite fix
- Skin that turns sandpapery once the weather turns cold and dry
- Anyone who wants real exfoliation without adding a second scrub product to the shower shelf
- People who already like their regular Fresh Suds bar and want one more, just for the rough patches. Not a replacement, an addition.
Who should skip it (the honest version)
- Freshly shaved skin, or skin that's broken or irritated. Salt will sting there. Use a regular bar for a few days, then bring the salt bar back in.
- Your face. These are body bars, made for elbows, knees, heels and shins, not a facial cleanser.
Which salt bar, and where the salt comes from
There are three salt bars in our shop, and the salt is what tells them apart:
- French Sea Salt: real French sea salt, with a light pink grapefruit scent
- Arctic Breeze: fine Canadian Arctic salt, with a Sea Salt & Sage scent. It's the round one, moulded in a sunflower shape, and one of the five bars in True North, our five-bar set.
- Bamboo: pink Himalayan salt with a little French pink clay, and a Bamboo & Teak scent
The salt in all three contains over 20 minerals. What really separates them is the scent and where the salt comes from. Pick the scent you'd enjoy in the shower every morning; that's the real decision here. You can see all three side by side in our exfoliating soap bars.
How to use a salt bar
Wet your skin, then work the bar in small circles over elbows, knees, heels and shins. Rinse well and pat dry. That's it. No pre-soak, no separate scrub step, no leaving it on like a mask.
What's in the bar, not just the salt
Salt bars are built a little differently from the rest of the Fresh Suds range. Coconut oil leads the recipe instead of olive oil, and they're the only bars we make with shea butter. Aloe is in every Fresh Suds bar, salt bars included. Cold-processed, palm-free and vegan, cured about 30 days, and made by hand in Chilliwack, BC, by two friends of thirty years.

FAQ
Is a salt bar too harsh for sensitive or reactive skin?
The salt is fine-grained, not coarse, and the bar also has shea butter and aloe in it. If your skin is reactive, start on the rough spots, like elbows and heels, and see how it feels. Skip broken or freshly shaved skin.
Can I use a salt bar on my face?
We don't recommend it. These are body bars, made for the places where a firmer polish is welcome. For your face, Rosemary Daydream is the bar we make for faces.
Will a salt bar dry out my skin?
It shouldn't feel that way. The salt does the exfoliating and the oils in the bar do the softening; that's how it's designed. Rinse well and pat dry rather than rubbing.
How long does a salt bar last?
Salt bars are hard and dense. Keep yours on a dish that drains between showers, or in a Soap Envelope, and it will last. More tips in how to make a handmade bar last.
